The practice was appointed to refurbish existing X-Ray Department at Singleton Hospital, Swansea and construct a new extension to accommodate a new MRI suite. The project required extensive improvements to the services
infrastructure to serve the new system.
The new building accommodates a 3 Tesla GE MRI unit housed in a dedicated room fully encapsulated in a copper membrane Faraday cage, to isolate the suite from external magnetic influences. The project and design of the building was carefully planned to allow the installation of the very heavy magnet just before the building was completed. The works were planned and coordinated to enable the existing department to function throughout the construction period.
HL Design have designed and procured numerous other MRI installations. In January 2002 the practice was appointed by Finlayson’s, a turn key contractor, to carry out the design for a new MRI suite in a restricted site location at the centre of the hospital. In 2013 the practice was again appointed to oversee the replacement of this MRI equipment and services infrastructure upgrade.
