HL Design were appointed by Velindre NHS Trust to design a new Radiotherapy Suite incorporating two Linear Accelerator treatment rooms and ancillary accommodation. The design of the treatment rooms is extremely specialised, and HL Design have gained an expert knowledge in the design of these treatment room chambers and the integration of the M&E services element of the project. The scheme was designed based on locating the plantroom directly over the Linear Accelerator rooms, utilising the thick concrete roof of the chamber as the plan room floor. The approach was to create a modern design which provided the patient with a modern yet homely light interior that was sympathetic to the patient’s requirements. The design won the Lord Major’s Civic Design Award in 1999. The project construction period was 24 weeks.
